Comparing portable vs. console ultrasound machines

by Sarah on June 19, 2009

When it comes to comparing ultrasound machines, there is a long list of factors to consider, starting of course with price. Then you need to consider what applications you need, the importance of specific features and the resale value of a used ultrasound machine if you anticipate selling the equipment and upgrading in the future. But one of the first things you need to decide when making an ultrasound machine comparison is whether to purchase a small, portable ultrasound system or a full-size console system. While that might seem like a fairly easy comparison, it’s not quite as simple as just picking the size of the machine.

In recent years the prices for portable ultrasound machines have come down tremendously, but smaller is not always better. If you plan to have your ultrasound system sitting in an office and rarely if ever plan to move it around, then do you really need a small and portable machine? You can sometimes save money by purchasing a larger console ultrasound system, even one that is a few years older. Some of the top selling console machines include the GE Voluson and HP Sonos 5500.

Of course if you plan to take your ultrasound machine out of the office, then a portable machine is your best bet. Some of the top selling models include the Sonosite Micromaxx and the GE LOGIQ line of ultrasound machines. The Acuson P50 is also a popular portable machine, and you can read a comparison of the Acuson P50 vs. the Sonosite Micromaxx.
